1 Water infrastructure How well the operation knows its own water network.

What is the size of the operation?

How is the operation’s water network documented?

How does the operation track consumption over the month?

2 Consumption and waste Whether losses are found before they reach the bill.

How are leaks usually found?

When the water bill goes up, can the team explain why?

How are taps, valves, floats and pumps maintained?

3 Management and reuse Whether there is a target, a routine and reuse in place.

Does the operation reuse water or harvest rainwater?

Is there a target to reduce water consumption?

4 Compliance and ESG Whether consumption data is auditable and meets reporting requirements.

How does the operation report water consumption for ESG or audit?

How is consumption split between sites, departments or tenants?

Before and after the meter

Two different losses, and only one is on your bill

The water meter separates what is the utility’s responsibility from what is your operation’s. Understanding that difference is the first step to knowing where to act.

Before the meter

Distribution loss

Water lost in the public network, through leaks and metering failures by the utility. It does not appear on your bill, but it makes the tariff more expensive for every consumer.

39.53% of treated water in Brazil in 2024

After the meter

Internal waste

Water your company pays for and does not use: hidden leaks, poorly adjusted equipment and consumption with no known origin. It appears in full on the bill, and only your company bears it.

Questions

Frequently asked questions about water waste in companies

What is the water management maturity assessment?

It is a free online assessment with ten questions about your operation. At the end, you get a score by area and the priorities for each gap. It takes about three minutes.

How do I know how much water my company wastes?

Add up 12 months of billed volume, average the three lowest-consumption months (the baseline) and compare it with the rest. Then shut the operation down for two hours and read the meter at the start and at the end: if the number moved with nobody using water, there is a leak. The excess over the baseline is what is at stake.

Is the water assessment free?

Yes. It does require registration: your name, e-mail and WhatsApp are recorded as you answer, even if you stop halfway. The score, the breakdown by area and the recommendations appear on screen at the end of the questionnaire.

Does the assessment result estimate how much I will save?

No, and deliberately so. The score measures water management maturity, how much the operation can see of its own water. Savings potential depends on what measurement finds in the operation, and no questionnaire replaces that.

What is the water loss rate in Brazil?

Brazil lost 39.53% of its treated water in distribution in 2024, according to Instituto Trata Brasil, based on SINISA (base year 2024) from the Ministry of Cities. These are losses to leaks, metering errors and unauthorised use, occurring before the water reaches the consumer’s meter.

Which Brazilian state loses the most treated water?

Alagoas, at 66.9% of distribution losses in 2024. At the other end, PiauĂ records 24.61% and is the only state already within the legal limit. In all, 16 states lose more than 40%.

What is the legal target for reducing water losses?

Portaria MCID nÂş 788, de 1Âş de agosto de 2024, sets three distribution loss ceilings: 35% through 2025, 30% between 2026 and 2032 and 25% from 2033 onwards. It revoked and replaced Portaria nÂş 490, of 22 March 2021, and applies to municipalities benefiting from federal public funds or financing with Union resources.

Is distribution loss the same as waste inside the company?

No. Distribution loss happens on the utility’s network, before the meter, and makes water more expensive for everyone through the tariff. Internal waste happens after the meter (undetected leaks, equipment out of adjustment, consumption with no known origin) and lands in full on the company’s bill. It is this second one that T&D measures and reduces.
